Özet: This paper examines from a historical perspective the principal preparation and training programmes, and the background leading to the evolution of a “portrait methodology” approach to facilitate principal support in Hong Kong. Drawing on related literature, this paper examines and discusses the development of the principal training programmes in Hong Kong to cater for the education reform and needs of individual principals. It is suggested that the demand for preparation and support on individual needs of principals towards the end of the last century created a climate for the development of the portrait methodology approach to supplement the current programmes and practices, and a comparative study investigating how primary and secondary principals of Hong Kong and UK dealt with the pressures of their work further provided an immediate insight for the approach to evolve.
