Özet: Cyprus is a Mediterranean island which is situated at the crossroads of three continents, Europe, Africa and Asia. Cyprus stragetic location has made the island a desirable destination for many civilizations for centuries. The warm weather, white, crystal clear sands and diverse historical places attract many tourists from all over the world. Today, Cyprus is becoming a prominent university island. Thousands of students from different countries are coming to study at the universities in Cyprus. Therefore, these universities have taken an important step toward improving their academic quality. Academic journals are also important means through which Cyprus can develop its educational policies and practices. Cypriot Journal of Educational Sciences is one of the most successful academic journals in Cyprus. The journal publishes articles from various education disciplines and is listed in many scholarly citation indexes. The aim of this special issues of Cypriot Educational Studies is to give the researchers an opportunity to share their academic studies related to Cyprus. First of all, I would like to thank all who have contributed to this issue. There are different focuses. For example, Cigdem Hursen and Cansu Meryem Birinci analyze art teachers’ educational needs during teaching process. The authors emphasize that knowing the needs of art teachers help improve the teaching and learning processes. The study which was conducted with 54 school teachers in North Cyprus revealed that teachers had some problems regarding education needs. Fezile Ozdamli and Ozge Beyatli, on the other hand, examined secondary school students’ internet addiction level. The survey method revealed that 59.9% of the students had low risk, 20.7 percent of them had high risk, 13.5 percent of them had no risk for addiction and 5.9 percent of them were internet addicts. Two articles in this issue are related to Turkish studies. Esra Karakas in her study analyzed the usage of metaphors in Turkish language textbooks. The content analysis showed that metaphors were not used sufficiently in these textbooks. Sevilay Atmaca and Hatice Kayhan studied the use of scientific themes such as Earth and Cosmos, Physical Event, Matter and Change, and Living Organisms and Life in Cyprus Folk tales. The study revealed that scientific items were widely used in these tales. The final article by Eda Kargi is concerned with how the child image is reflected into the Cypriot media. The researcher reviewed four national newspapers. Content analysis showed that the topics of the news were mainly related to education, culture-art, social solidarity-charity, and child abuse. Finally, I would like to thank Prof. Dr. Huseyin Uzunboylu for giving me the opportunity to be the guest editor of the Cypriot Educational Studies for the June 2013 issue. I would also like to thank Cigdem Hursen and Fezile Ozdamli for their great contributions to the journal. Best regards Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fatos Silman Cyprus International University, Cyprus [email protected]
