Özet: When I am talking about religion and state in Ethiopian history, I am talking about the relationship betweenEthiopian Jews, Christians, Muslims, and Animists on one hand, and the various Ethiopian governments thatruled Ethiopia at different times in the country’s long history on the other hand. I tried to see the relation betweenstate and religion in Ethiopia by focusing on three major periods of Ethiopian history. These are: the ImperialEra, that is, from the introduction of Christianity into Ethiopia in the 4th century A.D. until the 1974 EthiopianRevolution. The second period is the Marxist Era, that is, the period from 1974–1991. In May 1991 the MilitaryJunta was overthrown by the armed rebel groups which are now ruling Ethiopia. So the third phase is the periodfrom 1991 to the present. What did state-religion relation look like during this long period of Ethiopian history? In my research an attempt has been made to answer this question.
