Özet: Modernity significantly affected our image of the Qur’an and tafsir. It is one of the main assertions of modernism that the Islamic tradition could not sufficiently understand the Qur’an. The Qur’an was revealed in a certain historical setting. Having acknowledged this particular reality of the Qur’anthe Islamic tradition developed disciplines namely tafsir, hadith, kalam and fiqh in order to understand and interpret the sources the Qur’an Sunnah and Ijma the basic aim of Tafsir has been to find out the meanings that were intended by the revelation in its original historical setting. Classical tafsir,in accordance to its purpose, used narrations from the very first generations and studied the qur’anic language as a descriptive discipline, whereas the normative conclusions were derived from the sources of Islam mainly by kalam and fiqh.
