Özet: Plant genetic resources carry weight for the development of new varieties to meet the needs of a growing world population, also assessmentin different sectors. Genetic diversity existing plant genetic resources can be transferred future generations, on condition that those resourcesis conservated. At the present days, two basic conservation methods namely in situ and ex situ are utilized for the protection of plant geneticresources. Developments in recent years in the field of biotechnology provide great contribution to the the conservation studies of plant geneticresources. Biotechnnological methods such as conservation at the ultra cold conditions (cryopreservation), slow growth are applied in ex situconservation of plant species (recalcitrant seeds, problematic seed production, vegetative growing plants etc.) which are difficult to productand store by conventional methods. These methods are used effectively in order to prevent the loss of genetic diversity owned plant geneticresources by plant gene banks. In this review, significances, general principles, advantages and disadvantages of biotechnology methods havebeen discussed in the preservation of plant genetic resources.
