Özet: Organic farming is a form of agricultural production put into practice in order to eliminate the threats posed by the overconsumption of naturalresources and the extensive use of inputs. This study analyzes the current situation of organic farming in Turkey, number of products byyears, production areas, amount, organic production supports, certification bodies, imported and exported organic plant products and organicfarmers’ markets’ situation by years based on the data of the General Directorate of Plant Production. The number of products increased from150 in 2002 to 225 in 2016. Likewise, the number of organic farmers increased from 12.428 in 2002 to 45.991 in 2016. In 2002, the amountof production and the surface area of production were 310.125 tons and 89.827 ha, respectively. In 2016, however, the amount of productionand the surface area of production increased to 1.627.106 tons and 379.042 ha, respectively In 2017, the amount of financial support was 100Turkish Liras per decare for organic fruits and vegetables and 30 Turkish Liras per decare for field crops. According to the data of 2016, the topexport products were traditional products like hazelnut and products, fig and fproducts, raisin, apricot and products, and the top import productswere soybean, wheat, sunflower and sunflower products, and corn. There are 18 organic farmers’ markets in Turkey, including the first organicfarmers’ market of Turkey established in Şişli district of Istanbul province in 2006 and the last organic farmers’ market of Turkey establishedin Izmit district of Kocaeli province in 2016.The purpose of this study is to present the situation of organic plant production in Turkey to date and make suggestions for its development.
