Özet: Stainless steels find wide usage in the industry due to their high corrosion resistance and stainless properties. In addition to these superior features, poor oxidation resistance in aggressive environment is the biggest disadvantage and it has recently become the focus of researchers to increase the surface hardness in order to improve the service life of stainless steels. In this study, the AISI 304 L stainless steel surface was coated with the gray method using gray alumina and white alumina. Microstructure properties and layer thickness measurement of coated AISI 304 L stainless steels were examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Coating surfaces were measured by roughness values and coating layer hardnesses were carried out under a 20-gr load with the aid of a microhardness device. It has been found that the coating layer has a flat and smooth structure and the matrix coating transition layer has a flat structure. Layer thickness was 216.7 µm in coating with gray alumina and 116.7 µm in coating with white alumina. It was determined that surface hardness increased approximately 5.5 times in coating with gray Al2O3 and up to 7 times in coating with white alumina. The wear rates and friction coefficient of substrate material were decreased due to coating application with the white and grey alumina
