Özet: Saltpeter is the most important part of black powder, the oldest explosive known to man. Although it was not expensive to obtain saltpeter, which was a raw material produced in almost every region of the Ottoman geography, it was subject to strict control due to the importance of the field in which it was used. In this study, the production, shipping, and usage of saltpeter in Skopje and its neighborhood, which is one of the raw materials of firearms and whose first information dating the period of the reign of Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror was reached in the Ottoman archive documents, was focused on. It was emphasized that the production under the supervision of the Ministry of Skopje, which is estimated to be established towards the end of the 16th century, was transferred to Thessaloniki gunpowder factory in the middle of the following century, and to the Gallipoli and Azatlı gunpowder factories in the following periods. Especially whether a Skopje-based expert staff was formed over time, the measures taken by the state for the supply of saltpeter, and the problems experienced were evaluated based on the findings obtained from archive documents and local studies.
