Özet: This work sets out to examine the relationship between the numbers of scientific publications in 20 countries (mostly devoted to economics, econometrics, and finance), along with their citations—which are generally accepted as indicators of scientific productivity—and their economic growth and population. Focusing on the years from 1996 to 2014, the paper compares both developed and developing countries and spotlights significant differences in the two groups. Overall, a trend is revealed over the covered time period in which the developed world appears to be losing momentum, while their developing counterparts are powering ahead. China, Brazil, India, and Turkey, in particular, show impressive gains in population, GDP, and numbers of cited publications.
