Özet: Within the field of economics, one of the focal points in the debate on regional development is how to define and then measure socio-economic development in a given country or region of a country. With the goal of sorting out this variety of views, analyses and measurements have been conducted worldwide. Turkish economists have also participated in this effort. Factor analysis has been used widely in this area, but the Human Development Index (HDI), developed by the United Nations based on the pioneering work of some researchers, has recently become important. The HDI is used in this work due to its comparability, comprehensiveness, and ease of computation. In this paper, HDI with a gender breakdown for Turkey’s provinces was computed for the first time and the results were discussed. GDP per capita with gender breakdown, which is needed to calculate HDI with gender breakdown, was computed based on a methodology suggested by the authors. Regional clusters were identified on the basis of HDI results obtained.
