Özet: Abstract The purpose of this study is to investigate teacher candidates’ perception of concept of democracy and the factors effecting this perception by means of metaphors. Participants of the study consisted of 440 prospective teachers. “Democracy Metaphors Survey” was used as the data collection tool. In analyzing the data, descriptive statistics for quantitative data and content analysis for qualitative data were used. According to the results, prospective teachers developed 208 metaphors of democracy and these metaphors clustered into ten categories (equality, personal interests, independence, effort, dream, social base, pluralism, system, social order and modernity). The findings reveal that 73.3% of the teacher candidates have stated that no activities concerning democracy have been conducted in the scope of the lessons they had taken; 53.6% of them stated that they have not participated in student representative elections and, 85% of them have stated that these election process had not affected their thoughts on democracy, at all. The factors that most affect teacher candidates’ thoughts on democracy are family, news on the media and friends.
