Özet: This paper shows some urbanization landscapes that took place in the western periphery of the urban area of the Metropolitan Zone of Pachuca, State of Hidalgo, Mexico. These are local examples to discuss the challenges that diffused-disordered growth poses to the incipient models for governing a peripheral territory and the regulations derived for its administration. Thus, the main challenges in urban planning and in the management of territory in constant conflict and dispute are shown through the analysis of empirical data and official information, as well as the application of interviews to officials and non-participant observation in the considered territory, including complex processes with differentiated incidence towards local communities are shown. Although some projects and mega-projects have emerged as potential triggers of economic development, they are also showing consequences that deserve attention concerning their differentiated impact on the urban and peri-urban territory. Therefore, the application of a form of metropolitan governance focused on its peripheries is urgent to face the ecological, social, and economic problems that are being generated; and, with the current urban planning trend, seem to be irreversible.
