Özet: “La Reina del Sur” by Los Tigres del Norte is a narcocorrido that celebrates a woman who, against all odds, reaches a position of power in a criminal world ruled by men. However a closer look at the fictional construction (Butler) of Teresa Mendoza makes us question her liberation because we see her through a male gaze -the one of the authors-, she associates herself to hegemonic masculinities who become their teachers and / or lovers, and she appropriates masculine attributes. Far from being a liberated woman, Teresa becomes locked in a limiting portrait in which adopting a hypermasculine performance becomes the key to legitimate her authority.
