Özet: In the following work we propose a critique to the epistemology of rationalism, to the notion of knowledge as passive contemplation, to the subject / object separation and to the belief of an ethicless social science. To achieve this, we first framed rationalism in its relation to the development of the bourgeoisie in seventeenth-century Europe. We elaborate then a brief review of certain subjects of the Marxian critique of rationalism and introduce the work of three Latin American authors -Paulo Freire, Ignacio Martín-Baró and Franz Hinkelammert -whom, from various fields of study, have continued with this critique, making contributions to the epistemological renewal of the Latin American social sciences. In a third section we review some recent methodological contributions regarding research in co-labour and the role of militant research, particularly feminist, in the organization of grassroots movements. We end this article with a brief conclusion about the concepts of humanism and utopia.
