Özet: This essay makes a succinct review of the most influential criteria that were used as a measure of differentiation between the left and the right that meet in a typology that gathers the opinions expressed on this topic in four groups: definitions based on a specific material content, characterizations of the left based on the principle of equality, proposals that resort to alternative ideas and ideas that deny the validity of this distinction. Subsequently, the interpretation schemes that the Ecuadorian left made of itself with the aim of problematizing the definition of the political left in the 21st century are exposed. Finally, the arguments for the selection of another criterion in this debate are offered: the vision that the political forces have on the problem of power.
