An evaluation approach specific to classification of kinetic architectural facades

Özet: In this study, an evaluation approach that helps the decision-making stages before and after the design processes of kinetic façade systems, which are widely used today, is proposed. In this context, the concept of kinetic architecture, its components, and the historical development process are briefly summarized. As a result of the literature studies, the classification examples made from the past to the present are examined and evaluated in terms of positive and negative features, common and different aspects (of kinetic architecture classifications). In the approach proposal, these various classifications, which have been compiled, are grouped under five main headings: “concepts”, “movement & material”, “functions”, “control strategies & technologies” and “design strategies & methods” and their subtitles have been created. In order to present a useful evaluation tool, a sunray-shaped-classification diagram has been developed. This diagram has applied to eight worldwide known building examples that have characteristic kinetic façade features to determine its potential. The data obtained from the examples were examined in the table. Within the framework of the specified headings, this diagram has increased the readability of the kinetic façade system features of the examples, became directive, and facilitated the determination of trends in this area. Although the functions differ in the applications, it is determined that visual and thermal comfort are widely considered; the tendencies towards intelligent and learnable systems in control strategies are started, and the adapted concepts interact with at least one parameter.  Besides, it has been observed that subjects related to movement and design have special features in each different application. Other findings obtained in the study were stated in the conclusion section and some recommendations were presented.
