Özet: It is the responsibility of school administrators to achieve the goals of educational organizations. School dropout is seen as one of the problems of our education system. The reasons of school leaving behaviors of students and determining the prevention strategies in place and giving direction to solution policies are important in terms of individual and social development of students who are leaving school in formal education. School management can be effective in preventing school dropout by providing organizational effectiveness. This is due to the duty of the school principal on the reasons of school dropout and in school reasons. The main purpose of this study is to determine what kind of work is done by school administrators to prevent dropout. The research was conducted with a qualitative approach. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 7 school principals working in 7 middle and primary schools in Çanakkale in the fall semester of 2019-2020 academic year. The data were analyzed descriptively. According to the results of the study, family factors, socio-economic status and social environment of the students were effective on school dropout. According to the results of the research, it is stated that the attendance of the students should be followed and cooperation should be made with the parents in order to monitor the dropout. It was stated that home visits were important in terms of managerial effectiveness. According to the results of the research, it was emphasized that the students should be made to love the school and the importance of sports activities in the school. It is stated that the attendance of the students increases in the schools where there is an effective management. In this case, it is possible to talk about the effect of effective school management in decreasing dropout rates. School principals stated that management, family and other teachers should cooperate. It was stated that the school should have a friendly atmosphere and should be made attractive to the students.
