Özet: The aim of this research is to test the validity and reliability of the symbolically called “Self Evaluation Scale” which aims to measure the two opposing qualities of egotism and altruism in people. During this research 25 items were developed to measure egotism and 25 more to measure altruism, constituting a total of 50 scale items. These items were checked by 12 lecturers from the Department of Psychological Counseling and Guidance (PCG) at Gazi University in Ankara Turkey. In light of lecturers’ feedback, the items were revised and thus the fifty item scale was formed. The revised items were tested on 100 students from the Gazi Faculty of Education as a pilot study. The revised scale was administered to 286 students, 184 male and 102 female, aged between 19-24 from the departments of PCG, Preschool Teacher Training, and the Program in Education of Mentally Disabled in the Faculty of Education, Cyprus International University. Items of the scale comprised pluralistic culture, willingness to share social responsibility with individualist culture, social irresponsibility, help with expected behavior, help without expected behavior, and positive and negative attitude toward help in emergencies. Three factors were found as a result of the factor analysis. Apart from the discriminating power of the items, the correlation between rit and rjs was calculated and it was observed that the correlation varied between .42 and .83. Judging by the correlation values, it was concluded that the items were highly capable of measuring the qualities they aimed to measure both in the level of real subscales and regarding total points. It was also concluded that, with minor changes, the scale could be the subject of a new research in two months.
