Özet: The purpose of this study is to identify the perceptions of 9th grade vocational high school students regarding the topic of functions. 140 students participated in the study. The data were collected through an achievement test that was taken by 140 students as well as individual interviews conducted with 10 students - a subset of students who had taken the achievement test. Qualitative analysis methods were used to analyze the interview data, while the achievement test data were analyzed by using SPSS 15.0 statistical analysis program. The results of the data analysis show that students understand the Venn diagram representation of functions well and they do not have difficulty in understanding other elements of functions (such as domain, range and image set), but they have difficulty in representing functions as ordered pairs.
