Özet: Sustainable development is an approach that emerged after the Industrial Revolution, as a solution to the effects of economic development on the environment and the population. Today, its scope has grown as it is being used by several institutions and establishme nts. Development and sustainability have also been implemented in the media since the 1990s. United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO), efforts for freedom of speech, an independent and a pluralist media, played a primary role in forming the basis of media development. Taking the definitions of media development and sustainability as a starting point, the aim of this study, by which literature review was used as a basic method, is to discuss the strategies and action areas of countries for achieving an independent and pluralist media. In this context, the historical background of sustainable development and media development have been researched; an examination of Freedom House Press Freedom Index and International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX) Media Sustainability Index, which are commonly used to measure me dia development and sustainability, were examined. Because media has problems, structures and mass communication laws specific to the country it is part of, the study has concluded that the development of an indicator system on a national scale would be useful in order to determine solutions for the problems regarding the sustainable development of the media.
