Özet: The N. I. Lobachevsky Scientific Library of Kazan Federal University is one of the largest and oldest libraries and scientific institutions today in Russia. The library was established concurrently with the Imperial Kazan University in 1804. It officially started its first activities in 1806. The foundation of the library was laid with the book funds brought from the library of the First Kazan Gymnasium, in which the personal libraries of important statesmen were located. The first manager of the library and the person who prepared the first written catalog was Maximilian Storl (1761-1813), a professor of Greek Language and Literature at Kazan University. Russian mathematician and thinker Nikolai Ivanovich Lobachevsky contributed greatly to the development of the library. N.I. Lobachevsky also served as a librarian between 1825 and 1835. During his reign, book exchanges were made with both domestic and foreign institutions, existing book funds were developed, a reading hall was opened for the public, and a separate building was started to be built for the library (1834). After Lobachevsky, between 1835-1850, Kazan University professor orientalist Karl Karlovich Voigt (K. K. Fojgt) (1808-1873) took on the task of librarian. After K. K. Voight, the other name who took on the task of librarian and continued this task for about half a century was the Prussian Orientalist Joseph Gottwald (1813-1897). J. Gottwald, as the chief librarian of the Kazan University Library in the second half of the 19th century, he made great efforts for the classification of manuscripts and rare works related to the East in Kazan, the creation of collections of these works and the preparation of their catalogues. He donated his personal library, consisting of manuscripts and rare works, to the university library in 1895. Russian Orientalist and Turkologist Nikolay Fedorovich Katanov published a biography of Gottwald and a printed catalog of his library in 1900. According to the catalog prepared by N. F. Katanov, there are thousands of works written in both Eastern and Western languages in Gottwald’s library. Gottwald also took an active role in the publishing life of Russia, managing the Kazan University Printing House (1857-1884) for twenty-seven years. In the article, first, the history of the foundation of the Kazan University library is briefly reviewed. Afterwards, information about the life, activities and scientific studies of Kazan University librarian Gottwald was given and his contributions to the field of Russian Oriental Studies and Turcology were mentioned. This study has the feature of being the first study in Turkish literature that deals with Gottwald ‘s life, library and scientific studies.
