Özet: Fantasy is a magical door that breaks us off from the realities of the era and brings us to enchanted worlds occupied by mythological creatures. The art of cinema creates fantastic universes that make the people feel more liberated against what is real with visual wealth. Directors shape these worlds they create around a slew of cultural elements. This is because as they dive deeper into these universes viewed on the surface, it is seen that they are affected by the existence of culture and people through which they emerge and carry a series of indicators. This study aimed to answer what the effects of some religious teachings dominant in Japan are on fantastic universes. In this sense, Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki’s film Spirited Away will be discussed. The reason for the selection of the film was primarily that Miyazaki frequently referred to systems of belief that are a component of the daily lives of the Japanese. Teachings adopted not only as religious elements but as philosophies of life are seen in Miyazaki’s universe with elements that evoke real life. Additionally, the film Spirited Away was selected because it reflected a narrative of a fantastic universe and is still more popular. In terms of the subject of the study, analysis was done with a semiology method to produce the religious indicators that belong to the culture. With Miyazaki’s unique animation style, he produce the harmonization of indicators that include some religious teachings that are influential in Japan and the rich subtexts of the fantastic universe. Thus, revealing the effect of the religious indicators over Miyazaki’s film on the fantastic universe through analyses of adjacent meaning constitutes the goal of the study.
