Özet: Students and teachers are two of the important elements of teaching activities in schools. No matter what kind of suitable programs, books and class environments you prepare, as long as the teachers are not sufficient you cannot achieve the desired efficiency in education and teaching activities. The teachers have always occupied an important role, with their instructive role in the past and their guidance role today. The purpose of this study is to derive ideas regarding prominent positive and negative teaching characteristics of geography teachers working in Samsun Province.   In this study a survey including open ended questions was used as data collection method. The purpose for collection of relevant data by open ended question by a survey rather than one-on-one interviews is to reach opinions of more teacher candidates regarding teachers. In this context, opinions of 52 teacher candidates were collected regarding 18 teachers of varying genders who work at differing types of school. It is attempted to determine positive and negative characteristics of geography teachers and determine relevant frequencies of these based on the responses to the open ended questions in the survey. Prominent positive teaching characteristics of the subject teachers emerge as good communication, use of sufficient material and techniques, use of a clear and understandable language and utilisation of smartboards. Prominent negative teaching characteristics of some of the subject teachers emerge as failure to establish authority, limiting lecture activities to certain students and failure to use sufficient amount of material. However, according to study results, the number of teachers displaying prominently positive characteristics is more than the number of teachers displaying prominently negative characteristics in education and teaching in our schools.
