Linking Mathematics with Art: Using Mandala Patterns for the Teaching of Symmetry

Özet: In order to link mathematics with art, this study focuses on the use of mandala patterns for teaching symmetry subjects at 7th grade. A lesson plan for six hours based on the use of mandala patterns was prepared for reflection and rotation symmetry subjects. The lesson plan was carried out with 20 seventh grade students who were in a middle school in Eskişehir centre. The courses were completed, two hours a week, by three weeks. The data of the study was collected through observation notes taken by a researcher during the courses, students’ worksheets, a symmetry test in order to know to what extent students learnt symmetry subjects and a mini-survey in order to determine whether or not students could link mathematics with art. The data was analysed with a descriptive method. Findings of the study indicated that using mandala patterns could be an effective way to teach reflection and rotation symmetry subjects and to link mathematics with art.
