Özet: The People's Republic of China (PRC) was established in 1950, after a quarter-century civil war. The country, devastated by the civil war, launched the First Five-Year Development Plan in 1953 in the reign of the leader of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Mao Zedong. The development plan was aimed at both economic and social development of China. In particular, Mao aimed that Chinese women played a more active role in the economic and social life as part of the development plan. For this purpose, the Chinese government carried out an intensive propaganda activity in order to include Chinese women in the development plan. Due to the low literacy rate in the country, the Chinese government generally utilized visual and audio mass media tools in its propaganda activities. Especially during this period, posters were effectively used by Chinese propaganda. In this study, it was tried to find out how and in what way Chinese women were presented in the propaganda posters used in the context of the First Five-Year Development Plan in PRC. In this study, six Chinese propaganda posters, which were determined by using purposeful sampling method, were examined by semiotic analysis method in qualitative research methods. The propaganda posters determined within the scope of the study were analyzed in the light of the semiotics of USA semiotics Charles William Morris. As a result of the study, it was revealed that women were encouraged to take an active role in industry and agriculture, while at the same time they were idealized with family duties such as giving birth to children, doing housework and looking after children in propaganda posters.
