Özet: Today, the Internet has become an important part of our lives with the increasing development of information and communication technologies (ICT). Teachers and students use the Internet in both daily life and academic life to meet their information needs. The purpose of this study was to investigate information search and commitment strategies of the pre-service teachers in using web-based learning environments. In addition, the research attempted to determine whether these strategies significantly varied according to gender, frequency of the Internet use, department and grade. The research sample consisted of a total of 431 first year and fourth year pre-service teachers from Faculty of Education, Kocaeli University in 2012 spring term. In the study, "Information Commitment Survey Scale" was employed as data gathering instrument. The research used descriptive statistics such as frequency (f), ratio (%) and arithmetic mean ( ) and t test, Manova and Bonferonni test were utilized. According to the research results, “information organizing” was the most widely used strategy among the entire search and commitment strategies. Arithmetic mean of “multiple sources” strategies of the pre-service teachers at social science based departments was found higher than that of the pre-service teachers who were attending science based departments. On the other hand, arithmetic mean of “technical” and “match” strategies of the pre-service teachers who were attending science based departments was higher than that of those who were attending social sciences based departments. When we consider the fact that all students from primary education to higher education levels currently and intensely benefit from the Internet, it might be suggested that a further implementation of the study with primary and secondary school students may help to determine their strategies. According to the results, training sessions are thought to be beneficial for students to gain better “advanced information search and commitment strategies”
