Özet: The Melen Basin is one of the most important water basins in Turkey. In this study, it is aimed to reveal the geochemistry of sediments that especially the middle part of Melen River. The heavy metal contents of sediments on the upstream side of the river are relatively low; in contrast, in the middle part of river sediments have high heavy metal contents. The heavy metal contents in the sediments are considerably higher than the Upper Continental Crust values at many points. In particular, the high heavy metal contents in the sediment samples are visible in the mid-section of the river and relatively close to the downstream section. The organic carbon content of sediments in the study area is also very high (3.3%). A medium to high positive correlation is observed between the heavy metal concentrations and the organic carbon content in sediments. In particularly, this relationship in the central parts of the Melen River sediments should be due to both from the meander morphology of the Melen River and from the discharge of domestic and / or industrial wastes without adequate treatment. It can be said that the Melen River sediments face serious pollution hazard in terms of Ni in the studied locations. In addition, in many sediment samples area, heavy metal pollution of Cr, Cu, Ni, and As are considered to be on border and/or some parts exceed to pollution limit values.
