Özet: In this study; firstly, it was put forward Turkey's hydroelectric development status, then the hydroelectric power status of Eastern Black Sea Basin were investigated. Hydropower installed capacity in Turkey reached 26.681 MW by the year 2016. This value corresponds to 34% of total installed power. In terms of energy production; the share of hydroelectric power in total energy is around 25%, but it drops below 20% especially in drought and low rainfall years. The hydroelectric potential of the Eastern Black Sea Basin is 10,944 GWh per year. The portion corresponding to approximately 79.6% (8,706 GWh/year) of this value as of 2017 belongs to the HPPs in operation. Energy generated the hydroelectric power plants in operation correspond to approximately 18.8% of the total hydropower production in Turkey (58,218 GWh/year) as of 2017. The provinces having the largest hydroelectric potential in the basin were Giresun (32%), Trabzon (26%) and Rize (18.5%), respectively. Hydroelectric energy projects have a great importance for the Turkish energy sector and economy. For this reason, development studies and investments in the hydropower sector should be supported and put into operation immediately.
