Özet: Although history of description of the word “Global” dates back to 400 years ago, the “Globalization” effect is quite a new concept. Appearing first in 1960’s, it became more popular and more frequently used in the second half of 1980’s. The globalization effect accepts the world as a huge and one single market. In this process – particularly the information and communication technologies - contemporary life affects all aspects of our lives, such as social culture. The negative effects of globalization however are mostly seen on the developing countries and currently this fact is commonly discussed. Nowadays sport is a way of life developed in order to be healthy and have fun at the same time and to make use of the spare times. The sport in the globalization process is provided as combined together with the new developments in communication and technology. By means of globalization, today the more sports spectators mean more income for the sport clubs, which are each a business organization. However, the income factor for the sports clubs and the sports organizations are not limited to the number of the spectators but also include other income factors such as the media broadcasts, advertisement and TV revenues along with sponsors. Expansion of the capitalism on the other hand faced an interruption with the start of the World War I and establishment of the Soviet Union. Following the demolishment of the Soviet Union in the late 1980’s, globalization acquired a new dimension. The increase in the number of the multinational companies due to the globalization also reflects in the sports. In this regard, the importance and social functions of sports and the sports within the globalization process shall be discussed in general in the scope of this essay
