Özet: The social, cultural, historical, and architectural values of historical structures require their preservations and transmissions to future generations. Historical structures that are designed to respond to various functions in history, are not used with the change of living standards and requirements and are damaged because of disrepair and negative environmental conditions. One of the preservation methods of historical structures is the phenomenon of re-functionalization. Re-functionalization is an important step for preserving a structure that has a cultural value, ensuring its participation in urban life and use and providing its cultural and historical sustainability. In this study, historical Sultanahmet Prison will be discussed within the scope of re-functionalization. The factors that should be taken into consideration when determining a new function for a historical structure, intervention criteria, and decisions, criteria such as determination of site-specific characteristics before intervention will be explained. Thereafter, the historical and architectural characteristics of the historical Sultanahmet Prison will be introduced and finally interventions during the transformation of the function that are the structural, spatial, technological and contemporary annexes will be studied and to what extent the relevant structure maintains its original characteristics and whether the changes and annexes that are not location-specific due to the new function are in harmony with the old structure will be analyzed.
