Özet: There are many studies in the literature discussing the impact of defense spending on economic growth. The direction of the relationship between growth and defense spending in these studies has not been fully determined. In addition to studies that find a positive relationship, there are many studies showing that defense spending has negative effects on the economy. The lack of a consensus in the literature has led to a number of empirical studies. This study examines the relationship between economic growth and defense spending for Turkey and selected Middle East countries. Panel data analysis was conducted for the selected country group in the study between 1970 and 2012, using the up-to-date version of the defense spending data set up to 1988. In the analysis made with the new dataset, it was determined that there is a negative relationship between growth and defense spending
