Özet: Factors such as industrialization, urbanization and technological developments, have also affected the family establishment as well as other institutions. The change in structure, function and roles of the family has brought along some social influences. The increase in the divorce rate is one of them. There are many factors that affect divorce. Divorce in North of Cyprus according to tradition and customs is an undesirable phenomenon, but it has been increasing in the last 8 years. Children are the most affected population from the divorces. The future of society depends on the children growing up in healthy and organized environments. The well-being and peacefulness of the family is related to the establishment of the family on solid foundations. For this reason it is important to know that divorce is not just a phenomenon affecting the divorced couple, it is a social phenomenon that will also affect the future of society. In this research, the transition from the traditional large family to the nuclear family is compared by evaluating by the the divorce problem. The information obtained from the field related to the topic and the findings obtained from the semi-structured interviews with 460 individuals who have had divorce at least once are discussed with the quantitative and qualitative observation data and evaluated with the Cognitive Contradiction theory.
