Özet: Sharif al-Idrisi is the only scientist among Islamic geographers who does not belong to a school and shows seven climates on his maps in accordance with the Ptolemy tradition. The author, who knew the previous Western sources and especially Ptolemy very well in his works, was also able to follow the Islamic geography works published before him. These include the works of the authors of the Balkh and Iraqi geography schools, the works and translations of the Caliph Me'mun period, maps and the works of Turkish scientists. In this sense, the author is a Muslim scientist who has studied both Western and Eastern sources very well. The work he produced and the maps he drew are a vere accurate reflection of this, as a synthesis of both cultural environments. It is this characteristic that put him among the most important geographers of his time. al-Idrisi wrote his work in Sicily, at the court of King Roger and with his support, and when he finished writing he attributed it to him. The subject of this article is the writing process and the aims aimed of this work. As a method, document analysis and hermeneutics were used.
