Özet: The translation of proverbs is a special field within translation studies. Since they have strong cultural characteristics, they pose difficulties for translators. Originally, proverbs were researched in folklore, so that the term paremiology (proverb, saying), which goes back to Röhrich/ Mieder (1977), became established for this branch of science. In folklore studies, the origin of the proverb, its historical development and the social and cultural historical embedding have been investigated. Permjakov's work (1984) shows that peoples who do not know iron also do not have the proverb You must forge iron while it is hot (Tr. Demir tavında dövülür), but do know the proverb Shape from clay while it is wet.
