Özet: Based on the writings of contemporary observers and the investigation orders of the calamities recorded into the Muslim court registers of Edirne (sicils), this paper explores how local and central policy makers interacted in renewing urban space following disasters like earthquakes, fires, and heavy winters in Ottoman Edirne. It shows authorities at the local level had an immense effect on the renewal processes of the public space in Edirne. However, given the fragmented authority at the local level, it argues that the involvement of the central state became vital as urban renewal concerned various interest groups in Istanbul that were directly or indirectly connected with the city life in Edirne.
