Özet: This research aims to examine the relationship between independent learning behavior of preschool children and their school adjustment. The study group consists of a total of 106 children: 50 boys and 56 girls in the 5-6 age group attending preschool educational institutions affiliated with the Ministry of National Education. In the scope of the study, Personal Information Form, Independent Learning Behavior Scale (3-5) and Teacher Rating Scale of School Adjustment for 5-6 Years of Children were used as data collection instruments. Pearson Product Moment Correlation was applied for normally distributed variables and Spearman’s Rank Correlation Coefficient was applied for variables that are not normally distributed. The findings revealed significantly positive relationship at moderate level between preschool children’s independent learning behavior, their total school adjustment, self-directiveness and classroom participation positive relationship at low level between independent learning behavior and school liking. Additionally, no statistically significant relationship was found between the independent learning behaviors of young children and their school avoidance levels. Independent learning behaviors of preschool children were found to be associated with four of the five variables related to school adjustment. Findings reveal the importance of supporting the school adjustment process of young children with independent learning behavior.
