Özet: Introduction: Postoperative pain is an acute condition that arises from the stimulation of nociceptors as a result of surgical trauma and ends with tissue healing. Pain relief is very important for the relief of the individual, the increase in the quality of life and the reduction of complications. Aim: The aim of the study was to determine the use of nonpharmacological methods of the nurses in the management of postoperative pain. Method: This descriptive study was conducted with 538 nurses working in surgical clinics of three public and three private hospitals in Kocaeli between June and September 2017. The data were collected by using “The Non-Pharmacological Nursing Interventions Form for Pain” prepared by the researchers in accordance with the literature. SPSS 21.0 package program was used for data analysis. Results: The nonpharmacological methods frequently used by nurses were found to be positioning (51.3%), imagination (46.8%), relief (45.7%) and hot-cold application (43.5%). Insufficient number of nurses (68.0%) and heavy workload (64.7%) were found to be the most common reasons for not applying non-pharmacological methods. There was a statistically significant difference between all nonpharmacological methods used according to education level and working time of nurses (p <0,05). Conclusion: It was found that approximately half of the nurses sometimes used massage method, half of them frequently used positioning and hot-cold application methods, less than half of the nurses sometimes used the therapeutic touch method, the majority of nurses never used transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation management.
