Özet: The history of the Ottoman-Safavid relations lasts more than two hundred years. They began with the very birth of the Safavid State in the first years of the 16th century and continued until its decline in the first quarter of the 18th century, having had a significant impact on the history of not only the entire Middle Eastern region, but also Europe, Central Asia, India, and Russia. These relations have witnessed both protracted and bloody wars, as well as periods of peaceful coexistence, diplomatic and trade ties, cultural interaction and mutual influence. Accordingly, they found wide coverage in the Ottoman and Safavid sources, as well as the reports of European diplomats, travelers and merchants. In this article, we will try to take a look at the relationship between the Ottoman Empire and the Safavid State in the first half of the 16th century during the reign of the first two shahs – Ismail I (1501-1524) and his son Tahmasb (1524-1576), and also briefly analyze the character of the Ottoman image as it was presented in the number of early authentic Safavid sources. Of course, this topic is too extensive to be covered by the framework of one article. Therefore, we will focus our attention on three key events of the 16th-century Ottoman-Safavid relations. – the Chaldiran battle, the escape of the Safavid prince Alkas Mirza to the Ottoman court and the flight of the Ottoman prince Bayazid to the court of Safavid Shah Tahmasb.
