Özet: Problem statement: In todays higher education life foundation universities have an important role. The increasing number of foundation universities also increase the competition among them. On the other hand university candidates are more conscicous about their decisions. This makes public relations more critical. Approach: The study analyzes questions like: Are the catalogs of universities effective? Do the university candidates follow tv programs about universities? Do the candidates find exhibitions effective? Do social responsibility projects of universities have effect on the decisions of candidates? The case study examines the effects of public relations and publicity practices of universities on university candidates. The field survey was implemented with 200 university candidates in Bakirkoy, Besiktas, Fatih and Taksim districts in Istanbul. The closed ended questions applied were about the impact of public relations techniques used by universities. Results: The study showed that university candidates get most of the public relations messages and information from mass media and internet. Other than this as pr tools catalogs and exhibitions have important role on candidates decisions. Candidates watch tv programs about universities and follow advertisements and also want to visit universities to see their social and academic facilities. Conclusion: As the competition in education sector increase the importance of public relations activities. Universities to compete in such an environment should fulfill the needs of young generation. Should organize social meetings, participate in sector-specific exhibitions, create effective commercials, give honest messages in advertisements an use mass media and internet to establish reputable corporate image
