Özet: Choosing an occupation is one of the most important decisions for a person during his / her lifespan. One third of a lifespan involves vocational activities. An occupation is not only a way to earn Money or to provide a living; what’s more than that it’s the most important tool of the process or the claim for an individual to make oneself true. In today’s info socities; it is quite limited to get the opportunity to learn and know occupations just by observing, experiencing and living. For this reason some institutions which are responsible for preparing youngsters to choose their occupation have been evolved. The reality claiming that counselling is an institution which enables an individual to make the right choices with professional support is more than that it’s an institution of a service that helps an individual to obtain an occupation by guiding is considered with a higher rate day by day. In our study, vocational counselling; the birth of vocational counselling; the importance of vocational counselling in the education system; the function, the reason and the importance of vocational counselling have been discussed; an answer to the question “What is an occupation ?”has been seeked for; and the necessary information related to the choice of an occupation for an individual has been investigated. This article has been put in pen thinking that it would provide contribution to youngsters and the counsellors who are involved in counselling at schools during the occupation choice process.
