Özet: As a result of urbanisation and increase of population in cities, the development of public transportation goes back to the 17th century. In Turkey, in the 19th century a parallel development of local government establishment was observed together with the severe population increase and the need for better transportation. Initiatly İstanbul, than İzmir and after the foundation of the Republic in cities like Ankara and Bursa the public transportation operation was initiated. But, after the 1950s the developments on international and national transportation policies which also affected local governmentpolicies resulted in a change of the transport modes and actors of public transport services. Over the past three decades, the rapid technological development of highway transportation, the personal transportation gained more interest than the public transportation. In today’s Turkey, almost in all the cities, public transportation services are provided. However in many small and medium sized cities, intermediate public transportation and the privately owned bus operationconstitute the main form of public transportation
