Özet: The image of the city can be defined as impressions that can give people a sense of security and give meanings to their surroundings, with all the emptiness and occupancies. Thanks to this impression, individuals have a strong communication with the environment and with this interaction they create mental maps of the city. It is observed that imaginary perceptions of the city take place mostly in city squares as places where human activities are intense. It is very important to protect the squares, which are the symbols of cities, at the point of maintaining the spatial identity of the cities. Because, city squares are indispensable elements in the preservation of the identity and culture of cities, as they are the most prominent places that reflect the historical knowledge, experiences and identity of a city. When the subject is approached in terms of identity-image, it is necessary to carry out studies to maintain and protect the functions that squares undertake at this point and to develop principles in this regard. In this context, it has been tried to reveal the imaginative representation of the spatial elements that make up a square in the research. For this purpose, the method of the study has been established measurement and evaluations based on use opinions of the imaginary elements that make up Atatürk Square, the oldest and historical city center of the city of Kahramanmaraş. As a result of the study, it has been determined that Atatürk Square is represented by two square images over 50% (intermediate level) as Ulu Mosque and Taş Madrasa, according to user opinions. Atatürk Monument, Platanus orientalis L., Atatürk Boulevard, Şekerdere Boulevard, Çukur Hamam, ornamental pools, Municipality Bazaar and ceremonial area are determined as other imaginary elements. Another result of the study is; the importance of square images differs according to the purpose of use of individuals. Within the framework of the data obtained from the study, it has been tried to develop principles and suggestions on the protection and sustainability of the imaginary elements that define the city squares.
