Özet: Purpose: This study was planned to investigate the effect of body fat rate on social appearance and self-esteem in university students. Materials and Methods: In this study 335 students (229 girls, 106 boys) with an average age of 21.48 ± 2.26 years were included. Anthropometric measurements were made and the body fat ratio was calculated according to body mass index (BMI). Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) and Social Appearance Anxiety Scale (SAAS) and the Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale (HAD) were applied. Results: Waist and hip circumference measurements were high in males (p<0.001). RBS, SAAS, and HAD score were compared, it was found that only HAD-anxiety (HAD-A) score was high in female (p<0.05) and no difference between the other scales (p>0.05).RBS, SAAS, and HAD values were compared according to sex it was found that only the HAD-A score was high in females (p<0.05), and there was no difference between the other scales (p>0.05). In addition, a relationship was found between body fat ratio and SAAS only female (r = 0.216, p<0.001). According to the BMI classification, there was a significant difference in SAAS, waist, and hip circumference measurements in obese students (p<0.05). A low level of correlation was found between BMI,hip circumference and SAAS, waist circumference and HAD-A in all students (r = 0.134, p<0.05; r = -0.109, p<0.05; r = -0.117, p<0.05). Conclusion: It was found that obese students were found to have high social appearance anxiety. Also, the body fat ratio was associated with anxiety just female.
