Özet: Earthquakes frequently occur in our country due to the horizontal and vertical movements of plates within the earth’s crust. Horizontal loads acting on buildings as a result of these earthquakes have an important place in architectural design decisions. The design decisions regarding the horizontal loads caused by the earthquake in the structural system solution of the buildings differ from the architectural solutions considering the vertical loads. When the development of mosques in our country from the past to the present is examined, it is seen that there is a variety in terms of form and the location where mosques are built is also effective on this diversity due to culture, geographical situation, climate, technology and economy of the region. Field studies showed that the mosques that could not provide the building rigidity and ductility were heavily damaged as a result of earthquakes. In this respect, it is important in terms of the architectural discipline that the mosques, which stand out symbolically, should be safe besides being aesthetic and functional, taking into account the seismicity of the region in the earthquake-resistant design decisions. In this study, the effect of earthquakes on the form of the modern mosques that built on the active fault lines after the Kocaeli earthquake in 1999 was investigated. Structural system decisions taken during the design of ten selected mosques were evaluated by comparing building types, top covers, building volumes, structural and building materials by using data collection analysis method. These mosques were also visually analyzed in terms of horizontal and vertical irregularities mentioned in the Turkish Earthquake code. In conclusion, it has been observed that in addition to the buildings whose architectural designs were made by paying attention to irregularities in contemporary mosque architecture, there also examples that may cause slab discontinuity, weak and soft storey irregularities.
