Özet: Most of the world’s languages exist as a spoken language and a smaller number of them exist as both a spoken and a written language. A spoken language, passed down from generation to generation, can be learned even by foreigners by the way of memorizing and imitating its sounds and words. However, the societies which have written languages also have to prepare various written works, grammar books, spelling guides, etc. in order to to teach the language both to their own members and foreigners who want to learn this language. Spelling guides, as books of this kind, are also prepared for the correct learning and use of a language's written form (standard language). In spelling guides the correct spelling of the standard language words, especially borrowed words, phrases, numbers, etc. and use of punctuation marks are shown by examples. The section devoted to the use of punctuation marks in these spelling guides is quite extensive. Punctuation marks provide the presentation in writing of the elements that ensure the fluency of the word at the time of speaking (break, accent, intonation, etc.), as well as the presentation of non-verbal movements (gestures, facial expressions etc.) that add power to the word. Therefore, the punctuation marks in the article show the power and flexibility, practicality and persuasion efforts of the word. Failure to use the appropriate punctuation marks in writing or improper use of a punctuation mark may result in a false or incomplete message or a failure to express the message. For these and similar reasons, it is very important to use punctuation marks precisely and in the right place. As a living being, language also affects punctuation marks that play important roles in its written expression. As a result of this effect, punctuation marks can thus expand their usage areas by gaining vitality. One of the marks of extended use in Turkish is hyphen ("-"). This study focuses on new areas where hyphens are used and on the reasons for their use in these areas.
