Özet: Purpose of the study: This study has been undertaken to evaluate te effecacy of autotransfusion devices in abdominal aortic aneursym operation. Methods: 89 elective, 20 urgerit and a total of 109 abdominal aortic aneusym operations have been perfor­ med in the lstanbulMedical Faculty, Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Department between the years 1982- 1994. The autotransfusion technique we have been using in ihe open heart operations since 1989, have been used in 9 urgent and 21 elective procedures. Pre and postoperative hemoglobin, hematocrit, red celi and plate­ let counts were noted along with intraoperative and postoperative blood losses. This dala was compared with the values of abdominal aortic aneurysm operations that had been undertakenbefore 1989. Results: Whereas no significant improvement with autotransfusion could be demonstration in the elective ane­ urysm cases, the technique has significantly improved the outcome in !he emergency cases. Discussion : The routine and successful usage of autotransfusion devices in the open heart procedures, has led the vascular surgeons to use this method in abdominal aortic operations. Our clinical experiences has shows us !hat the usage of autotransfuı;ions techniques can be limited to emergency cases and thus the operation costs can be minimized.
