Özet: Objective: Carotid bruit is thought as an important finding of extracranial carotid arterial disease. Auscultation of the carotid bruit is directly related with the experience and ability of the doctor. In this study, we reviewed the literature about the presence of carotid bruit after carotid endarterectomy operations. The aim of this study is to evaluate the value of the presence of carotid bruit in examination of carotid artery disease, for referring the patient to vas- cular surgery. Material and Methods: Records of the operated patients in both our clinic and literature was reviewed. Patient files were examined retrospectively. Due to the fact that our institution is an educational hospital, the physical examinations were made by many different doctors. Results: 134 carotid endarterectomy operations have been applied to 126 patients between January 2000 and December 2006. In 49 of 126 patients (38.9%) carotid bruit were present (in 26 patients ipsilateral, in 23 patients bilateral). Conclusion: Carotid bruit is an important sign of carotid artery disease. However, in our cases, incidence of detecting carotid bruit in preoperative carotid artery disease patients was around 40%. Considering this, failure to detect carotid bruit in auscultation does not mean that there is no carotid artery disease in a patient. As a result, in all patients prone to coronary artery surgery, carotid doppler scanning shall be done, no matter what there is a carotid bruit or not.
