Özet: Objective: In this study, patients treated for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) were investigated regarding the causes of admission to the hospital and the etiologic factors. Material and Methods: Medical files of the 60 patients treated for lower extremity DVT were evaluated retrospectively in this descriptive study conducted in Cardiovascular Surgery Clinic of a teaching and research hospital, between January 2011 and December 2011. Files of the patients were analyzed regarding the demographic characteristics, causes and duration of hospitalizations, physical examination findings, etiologic factors and the localization of the DVT. All data were shown as the average, number and percentages. Results: Majority of the patients (95%) were admitted to hospital because of pain and swelling in the lower extremities. Homan"s sign was positive in 41.7% of patients in the affected extremity. Thrombosis was localized to femoral vein in approximately half of the patients (46.7%). The most frequently identified risk factors were surgery (46.2%), previous DVT (35.9%) and genetic predisposition (12.8%). Conclusion: Surgical intervention was the top etiologic factor that caused DVT. For this reason, patients undergoing surgery should be well informed about the benefits of ankle exercises, increased mobilization and the signs and symptoms of DVT before hospital discharge. In addition, we suggest that further prospective studies should be done on this subject to investigate the genetic predisposition especially in young and patients without any significant etiologic factors.
