Anahtar Kelimeler:Objective: This study was carried out to assess the effects of cilostazol on maximum walking distance and ankle-brachial index in the patients with moderate to severe intermittent claudication due to atherosclerotic pe- ripheral arterial disease. Material and Methods: A total of 116 patients (99 men and 17 women) were enrolled in the study. The measurements for the maximum walking distance and ankle/brachial index of the patients had been taken before initiating the treatment. For a period of 24 weeks,Cilostazol had been administered twice daily to all patients. During the study,The walking tests and ABI measurements were assessed,T every 4 weeks. Results: Mean age of the patients were 58.06 years. After 24 weeks,Average walking distance increased from 143.4 (25-75%) me- ters to 231.0 (25-75%) meters in the patients treated with 100 mg cilostazol. The increase in the walking distance was apparent following the forth week of the treatment. The changes in the ABI values were determined in 54.4% (n=47) of the patients treated with cilostazol. The improvement in the ABI values was 11.43% within the group. The subjective assessments for the measurement of the treatment efficacy were performed using questionnaires which assessed quality of life and functional condition before and after the treatment. As a result of those questionnaires,It was concluded that the treatment increased the quality of life. During the study period,Adverse effects were ex- perienced in 13 patients. Conclusion: It has been clearly found that cilostazol has positive effects for increasing the walking distances and improving the ABI in the patients with intermittent claudication.
