Özet: Objective: Several epidemiological and clinical data revealed a relation between cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and Vitamin D deficiency. Low levels of Vitamin D affect the pathogenesis of heart failure and peripheral arterial diseases, and also increase risks for hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and myocardial infarction. Epidemiological studies reported that Vitamin D deficiency could be an indicator for cardiovascular risk, might accelerate atherosclerosis and played role in cardiovascular events. We aimed to investigate Vitamin D deficiency in patients who treated with the diagnosis of CVD in our clinic. Material and Methods: CVD (atherosclerotic coronary artery disease and peripheric artery disease) patients who admitted to our clinic between August 2011 and September 2015 were analyzed retrospectively. Serum creatinine, albumin, parathyroid hormone levels, calcium, ionized calcium, total protein, phosphorus, magnesium, total cholesterol and Vitamin D3 levels were recorded. Results: Our study revealed that 21% of patients had Vitamin D3 deficiency, 42% of the patients had Vitamin D3 insufficiency, and 36% of the patients had normal Vitamin D3 levels. These results indicated that CVD patients had lower Vitamin D3 levels compared to normal population, and the calcium metabolism was normal. Conclusion: In our study, as shown in other studies, vitamin D was found to be associated with atherosclerotic diseases. Recent studies revealed that this relationship was based on the effects on calcium metabolism and inflammation which forms the basis of atherosclerosis, also by increasing atherosclerosis risk factors such as hypertension and lipid metabolism. Further studies may define vitamin D deficiency as a risk factor for atherosclerosis in cardiovascular diseases.
